¹² Dr. Burnell (South-Indian Palæography, second edition, p. 36, note 2) proposed to identify the first of these two places with the modern 'Pulicat' in the Chingleput District, Madras. But Dr. Hultzsch (Epigraphia Indica, Vol. I. p. 398, note 4), has pointed out that this identification is untenable, because 'Pulicat' is simply an Anglo-Indian corruption of Paḷavêrkâḍu, 'the old forest of vēl-trees.'—The name of the second place seems to be a Sanskrit translation of some Drâviḍian name as Pallôr or Hallûr, 'the village of the tooth.' Dr. Burnell (loc. cit.) was inclined to take it as simply a Sanskrit name of Palakkaḍa, which latter word, he suggested, was derived from pallu, 'tooth,' and kada, 'place.' This, however, does not appear sound.
