¹ See, e. g., an inscription at Dāvaṇgere, of A. D. 1123 (P. S. and O.C. Inscrs. No. 146; Mysore Inscriptions, p. 8), which mentions the Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Vijaya-Pāṇḍyadēva, a vassal of the Western Chālukya king Perma-Jagadēkamalla II.; as ruling over the Noḷambavāḍi thirty-two-thousand at the capital of Uchchangī; also a record at Bēḷūr (P. S. and O.-C. Inscrs. No. 18; Mysore Inscriptions, p. 266), which says that the Hoysaḷa-Ballāḷa II. took Uchchangī, and then, when the Pāṇḍya cast himself on his mercy, restored him his kingdom.—As regards the identity of the place, see page 285 above, note 5; it may apparently be either of the two Uchchangīs mentioned there.
