Before this communication was received, Captain Welsh had become convinced that Krishna Nārāyan was trifling with him, and he determined to take vigorous measures to reduce him to obedience. Before daylight on the morning of the 6th December, 1792, he crossed the Brahmaputra with two hundred and eighty men, and landed near a small hill with a temple on it, presumably Asvakrānta, on and around which the enemy's troops, three thousand strong, were posted. The foot of the hill was reached without opposition, but at this point the enemy made several determined attempts to repel Welsh's small force. They were, however, unable to withstand the steady discipline and superior arms of the sepoys, and fled with the loss of twenty killed and forty wounded, besides several prisoners. Forty cannon mounted on the hill were also taken. On the British side, the only casualties were six men wounded.
