Krishna Nārāyan rallied his men some distance from Gauhāti, and, towards the end of the month, he was reported to be ravaging the tract east of the Bar Nadi which now forms the Mangaldai sub-division. A detachment of three companies under Lieutenant Williams was promptly sent against him, and, after some manœuvring, engaged a band of five hundred Barkāndāzes at Khātikuchi. A hundred of them were killed or wounded, and the rest fled across the Bhutān frontier, which at this period extended into the plains as far as the Gosāir Kamala Ali. There is nothing to show when this encroachment on the part of the Bhutias began, but it was not formally recognized until Gaurināth's time.
