When Koliābar had been secured, the rest of the troops were gradually removed thither. Early in January Marā Mukh was occupied. From this point, several detachments were sent out, who operated with great success against various stockades in the vicinity held by the Burmese. The Burmese were thus compelled to concentrate their forces at Jorhat, leaving the road open for the British advance. They were also, at this time, distracted by internal disputes, and the Burhā Raja, or Burmese Governor, was assassinated by a rival leader, known as the Shān Phukan. Despairing of defending Jorhat, they set fire to their stockade and fell back upon the capital at Rangpur.
