v1.c28.83

¹ [In Lieutenant-Colonel T. B. Jervis’s MS. studies of the Marāthā people, Nānā Farnavīs (Furnuwees) is described as descended from Mādhuī Pant Bānū, a Chitpāvan Brahman and a village-officer in Bankot tāluka, Ratnāgiri District. He gave shelter to Tānu Vishvanāth, brother of the Pēshwā Bālāji Vishvanāth, after his defeat by the Sīdīs near Srivardhan, and was subsequently invited by the Pēshwā to Poona. His three sons were given employment at Court, the elder, Bālāji, being appointed Farnavīs. He died at Delhi, leaving two sons, Janārdhan Pant and Bābu Rāo, who succeeded to his office. Janārdhan Pant’s son, Bālāji, after his flight from Pānīpat, filled the office of Farnavīs jointly with his uncle Bābu Rāo and his son Morobā. (J.B.B.R.A.S., xxii. 65.)]
