v1.c7.179
Kānūngo (Qanoongo) means ‘expounder of the law.’ The Kānūngo was an officer retained as a special authority on all customs and usages connected with the tenure of land. The office was hereditary, and still survives in the United Provinces in a modified form. Akbar’s Kānūngos were graded in three classes, with allowances respectively equivalent to twenty, thirty and fifty rupees a month. (Smith, Akbar, p. 370.)]
