v1.c9.122

A.D. 1615.—But Mullik Umber was not always prosperous; he frequently experienced severe reverses, and about the year 1621, some of the principal Mahrattas in his service were induced to quit his standard and go over to the Moghuls. The most important defection was that of Lookhjee Jadow Rao, Deshmookh of Sindkheir, whom we have already mentioned as a principal Mahratta chief under the Nizam Shahee government. The manner in which the Moghuls received and rewarded him is in itself a proof of the great power and consequence which the Mahrattas had by that time attained. A munsub of 24,000, with 15,000 horse, was conferred upon him, and such of his relations as accompanied him were all raised to high rank.
