v2.c37.56

¹ [As early as May 15, 1780, the Bengal Government had written to Bombay that ‘our distress for money is such that we shall be unable to make adequate remittances for the support of your Presidency, and the pay of the large army under command of Brigadier-General Goddard. We must therefore desire that every accession of revenue which may immediately arise to the Company from the operations and successes of General Goddard’s army be set aside and appropriated exclusively to that expense.’ (Forrest, *Selections (Marāthā Series)*, i. 420.)]
