v3.c29.34

During the last two years of his reign Ibrāhīm ‘Ādil Shāh waged unsuccessful warfare against the Portuguese in the northern Konkan, and in 1558 died at Bījāpur. It had been his intention to disinherit his eldest son ‘Alī, who was a Shiah, in favour of the younger, Tahmāsp, but on discovering that Tahmāsp was even a more bigoted Shiah than ‘Alī he let matters take their course. ‘Alī ‘Ādil Shāh I reestablished the Shiah religion and Foreigners were again encouraged to enter the service of the state, and regained their old ascendancy.
