This enthronement took place on the 15th Zul Hijja, 1132 H. (October 15th, 1720). The Prince, then about twenty-three years of age, was the eldest son of Rafi-ush-shan, third son of the Emperor Bahadur Shah; and was therefore the brother of the Emperors Rafi-ud-darjat and Rafi-ud-daulah. He* had been designated by the Sayyids as the latter's successor, but Sayyid Khan Jahan, *subahdar* of Dihli, with whom the final choice rested, dreading Ibrahim's reputation for violent temper, had substituted Roshan Akhtar, now become Muhammad Shah.
