As regards the Malay Peninsula, the earliest account of its trade activities is furnished by the Arab writers.⁴ Reference has already been made to the importance of Kalah-bar as a port, and also to the glowing description of the wealth and grandeur of Zābag, which must have included a great part of the peninsula. The chief articles of trade seem to be clove, cardamom and other spices, aloe, amber, sandalwood, tin, and camphor.
