The Aṅgas, unknown to the *Ṛigveda*, are mentioned in the *Atharvaveda* (V. 22) as noted above. There is nothing in the Vedic texts to indicate their location beyond the fact that they were people of the east; but as in later times their settlements were on the rivers Son and the Ganges, it may be presumed that their earliest seat also was in the same region. They have been associated with the Magadhas in some texts. There is no evidence in Vedic literature for Pargiter’s view that the Aṅgas and Magadhas were non-Aryan peoples that came overseas to eastern India.³¹ Oldenberg, however, thinks that these tribes were the earlier Aryan immigrants. Confirmation for this may be found in the Puranic evidence which speaks of the Ikshvākus and Videhas being of the same stock and as inhabiting the country since Rigvedic times.
