The Vedic texts do not know of north Pañchāla and south Pañchāla which we come across in the *Mahābhārata* and the Purāṇas; evidently the Pañchālas had extended their country by conquests in post-Vedic times. The territory of the Pañchālas roughly corresponded to the Bareilly, Budaun, Farrukhābād, and adjoining districts of the United Provinces.²⁶
