The Prophet's ordinances regarding toleration and conversion by means of persuasion were seldom followed by mediaeval rulers. Here and there we come across a ruler with an original turn of mind who rejected the dogmas of the ‘Ulama and tried to shake off the ecclesiastical trammels, but the general trend of the policy of early Muslim governments in Hindustān was to humiliate the Hindus, for in the humiliation and abasement of the Zimmi consisted the glory of the faith.’ ‘Ala-al-Din asked Qazi Mughis of Biyanah as to the position of the Hindus in a Muslim state.
