The Durbār had an ecclesiastical atmosphere about it. Probably even the liberal-minded Muhammad could not wholly set aside the time-honoured observances of the orthodox school, for when a Hindu appeared before the Sultan to make obeisance, the Hājibs and *naqībs* uttered the phrase *Hadāk allah* (may God bring you to the right path) instead of *Bismillah* obviously to emphasise the distinction between a believer and an unbeliever.
