v1.c15.141
The Khyber is protected by its own hill tribes, enlisted in the Khyber Rifles. We have brought these Pathān mountaineers into the service of law and order by enrolling them in military forces, just as the Scottish highlanders were enrolled in the British army in the eighteenth century. The Pathāns are born fighters. They love fighting for its own sake, and many a curious tale is told of the vendettas intermittently continued when the Khyber riflemen of Peshāwar return from time to time on furlough to their homes in the hills.
