Thd Matsyas first appear in a passage of the *Ṛig-Veda*⁷ where they are ranged with the other antagonists of Sudās, the great Ṛigvedic conqueror. The *Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa*⁸ mentions a Matsya king named Dhvasan Dvaitavana who celebrated a horse-sacrifice near the Sarasvatī. The *Brāhmaṇa* quotes the following *gāthā* (song) :—
