Kosala was probably the fatherland of Janaka's *hotṛi* priest, Aśvala, who was very probably an ancestor of Āśvalāyana Kausalya¹ mentioned in the *Praśna Upanishad* as a disciple of Pippalāda and a contemporary of Sukeśā Bhāradvāja and of Hiraṇyanābha, a Kosalan prince. The details of Kosalan history will be discussed in a subsequent chapter.
