In the twelfth century the classical idea still prevailed in the Karṇāṭaka, although the actual use of one of the essential parts—chariots—had long become out of date. The four-fold divisions of the army (*hasty-aśva-ratha-padāti-balam*) are mentioned in A.D. 1143.⁴ Even so late A.D. 1302 the people remembered the *caturanga-balam*.⁵
