In April 1696 Zulfiqar had beaten back Santaji near Arni, but thereafter he confined himself solely to the defensive in the fort of Arcot, as his strength was still further weakened by the death of his captain Rajah Kishore Singh Hada. [*Dil.* 118*b*.] The Marathas, as usual, hovered round him, there being a secret understanding between the two sides to spare each other.
