² The Vēḷs seems to have been local chieftains somewhat resembling the feudal barons of mediæval Europe. The Tamil Śangam dictionary under *Vēḷir* quotes the *Abhidānacintāmaṇi* and calls them குறுநில மன்னர். Nāṭṭukkurumbu may be Kurumbanāḍ as suggested by Mr. H. K. Sastri.
