¹ See *E.I.*, vol. viii, pp. 317 ff and *Trav. Arch. Series*, vol. i, p. 157 and *n.* 23. Mr. Gopinatha Rao has observed (*n.* 21), ‘It is curious to note that a shrine for Narasimha, the Brahman lion-god, was excavated in the Ānamalai hill (the Jaina Elephant hill). Perhaps it was intended to symbolize that the lion of Brahminism put down the elephant Jainism.’ For the orthodox legend about this hill and temple see chapter I (*ante*).
