³⁶ See *JRAS.* 1913, pp. 529-31. Some vague popular legends connect the poet of the *Kuraḷ*, Tiruvaḷḷuvar, with a merchant prince, Elela Singa, (V.R.R. Dikshitar-*Studies in Tamil Literature and History*-pp. 129 ff.), but no one knows where these come from, and they lack all claim to credence and can furnish no basis for a date for Tiruvaḷḷuvar. For other instances of Tamil influence in Ceylon, not specially known to be Cōḷa, see *MV.* xxi 10, Sena and Guttaka; xxxiii 56, Puḷattha and others; xxxiv, 19 ff. for the infamous career or Anulā-dēvi who made over the country to a succession of her Tamil paramours.
