His successor was Harivarman (538-50). He was a man of peace in whose reign the Kadambas lost the northern half of their empire, and Pulakeśin I established the Chālukya power in 545 by erecting a strong hill fortress in Bādāmi. The Kadambas were by no means a strong or united power, and the feud between the elder and the younger branches was revived by Krishnavarman II who actually undertook an expedition against Vaijayantī which put an end to the reign of Harivarman, the last known ruler of the elder branch. Either Krishnavarman II himself or his son Ajavarman must have been ruling Banavāsi at the time of its conquest by the Chālukya Kirtivarman, son of Pulakeśin I.
