² Cunningham, *Geog.* p. 251 and map IX, thought that the Indus sometimes made a true island just north of Patalene; but this could not be Pliny’s island, as it would be in Abiria, while Prasiane is an eparchy name itself. The word ‘island’ here must ultimately represent the Sanscrit *dvipa*, *doab*, which means any tract of land between two rivers (*cf. CHI* p. 550), a usage common everywhere; Arab geographers called Mesopotamia *el jezireh*, ‘the island’ (J. Kirste, *Wien SB* 182, 1918, Abh. 2 p. 72), and compare the long peninsula in Scotland called the Black Isle of Cromarty.
