(vi) The Nagas or serpent-worshippers figure in a semi-mythical way in the early epic traditions. In protohistoric times, they are mentioned as people associated with various mountainous regions called after the names of serpent-kings like Vasuki, Karkotaka, Ananta, Sesa, Samkhacuda, Pundarika and Taksaka. Their daughters were married to epic heroes like Arjuna and Kuśa, son of Rāma. Nāga colonies and kingdoms therefore extended all over the mountainous belt between the Narmadā and the Godāvarī along the Vindhya and the Satpura up to the Chhoṭā-Nāgpur plateau.
