Three routes connected the Indo-Gangetic plain with the south. In fact the first two, i.e., the Indraprastha-Ujjaini and Kosambi-Vidiśa routes provided access to Central and Western India while the third which ran parallel to the East Coast from Tāmralipti reached the southernmost tip of the peninsula, branching into valley routes of the Godāvari, the Kṛṣṇa and the Kāveri. This was the Great South Road in the real sense of the term. The cross-routes from Śarāvasti and Vaiśāli to Kāśi and Rajagṛh directly completed the networks of the routes in ancient India.
