As mentioned earlier, the Purāṇas name three latitudinal ranges north of Meru (Pāmīrs)—i.e., the Nīla, the longest and nearest to Meru; the Śveta, slightly shorter than the Nīla and further north; the Śṛṅgavān, the shortest and farthest to the north. They have been identified in an earlier chapter as follows:
