It appears that there is some confusion regarding Ramaṇaka, Hiraṇyavat Varṣa, Kuru and Uttara Kuru lands. A plausible explanation is that the correct Purāṇic divisions, viz. Ramyaka or Hiraṇyavat Varṣa lying between the Nīla and Śveta ranges, Kuru land between the Śveta and the Śṛṅgavān and the Uttara Kuru beyond the Śṛṅgavān range got mixed up in course of time and an error was introduced by reciters or copyists and was carried over in subsequent versions. This suggestion removes the anomaly in Purāṇic descriptions and indicates the correct positions of all these regions in conformity with all the relevant statements mentioned above.
