According to the Purāṇas, there are four major rivers which flow from Meru towards north, south, east and west. In the Scriptures also there are four rivers, and we find in Edda, four primeval rivers of milk flowing from the teats of Audhumble. In all these accounts, these rivers are only four branches of the original river, Swargaṅgā or Mandākinī in the Purāṇas. In the Edda also all rivers have their origin from the parent river called Ilvergelmer, but in Scriptures it has no name.
