*Carmanvatī.*—The Padma Purāṇa (Uttarakhaṇḍa, vv. 35-38), the Yoginītantra (2. 5, pp. 139-140) and Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī (VIII, 2. 12) mention this river. The Carmanvatī or Chambal takes its rise in the Aravalli range, north-west of Indore, and flows north-east through eastern Rajputana into the Yamunā. It is a tributary of the Yamunā. It is associated with the Pāripātra or Pāriyātra mountain (Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, 57. 19-20).
