*Sāñcī*.—The ancient name of Sāñcī was Kākanāda (*C.I.I.*, Vol. III, 31; Luders’ List No. 350). It is noted for its ancient Buddhist *stūpas*. A large number of votive inscriptions from the Sāñcī stūpas are available (*E.I.*, II, 87ff.). Sāñcī is situated 20 miles north-east of Bhupal in Central India. (For details, vide Cunningham, *Bhilsa Topes*, p. 183.) The Sāñcī Stone Inscription of Candragupta II mentions Sāñcī village which is situated about 12 miles to the north-east of Dewangunj in the sub-division of the native state of Bhupal in Central India (*C.I.I.*, Vol. III). There is a difference of opinion as to the date of construction of the Topes at Sāñcī. For details, vide *Excavations at Sāñcī* by M. Hamid, *A.S.I., Annual Report*, 1936/37 (1940); *The Monuments of Sāñcī* by Sir John Marshall and Alfred Foucher, 1940.
