Ujjayinī was built by Accutagāmi.⁶ According to the Avantya-khaṇḍa of the Skanda-Purāṇa (Ch. 43), the great god Mahādeva after destroying the great demon called Tripura visited Avantipura the capital of the Avantis, which, in honour of the great victory obtained by the god, came to be known as Ujjayinī.
