Cedi.—The ancient Cedi country lay near the Jumna. It corresponds roughly to the modern Bundelkhand and the adjoining region. The capital of the Cedi country was Sotthivatinagara, probably identical with the city of Śuktimati of the *Mahābhārata*.⁶ Sahajāti and Tripuri were other important towns of the Cedi kingdom.⁷ The road from Kāsī to Cedi was unsafe.⁸ The Cetaraṣṭra was 30 yojanas distant from Jetuttaranagara, the birthplace of Vessantara.⁹ It was an important centre of Buddhism.¹⁰ Anuruddha while dwelling among the Cedis won Arahatship.¹¹ The Buddha went to the Cedis to preach his doctrine.¹²
