Vamsa.—The kingdom of the Vamsas or Vatsas had Kausāmbi as their capital, identical with modern Kosam near Allahabad. It had the Bharga state of Sumsumāragiri as its dependency.¹³ The city of Kausāmbi was built at the site of the hermitage of one Kusāmba.¹⁴ The origin of the Vatsa people is traced to a king of Kāsī.¹⁵ Kausāmbi is mentioned as one of the great cities where the Blessed One should attain the Mahāparinibbāna. The city of Kausāmbi was visited by the followers of Bāvari, a leader of the Jaṭilas.¹⁶ Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja dwelt at Ghositārāma at Kausāmbi. He was the son of the chaplain to king Udena of Kausāmbi.¹⁷
