Kumbhakoṇam.—It is situated on the river Kāveri, a great educational centre and one of the oldest cities of South India. The Śāraṅgapāṇi temple, Kumbheśvara temple, Nāgeśvara temple, and Rāmaswāmī temple deserve mention. The city derived its name from the deity Kumbheśvara. The Nāgeśvara temple contains a separate shrine for Sūrya. Śāraṅgapāṇi is a Vaiṣṇava deity and an incarnation of Viṣṇu. The Rāmaswāmī temple is said to have been built by a king of Tanjore in the 16th century A.D.
