Māhiṣaka (Māhiṣīka).—It is in the south and the people inhabiting it are referred to in the Purāṇas (Mārkaṇḍeya, LVII, 46; Matsya, CXIII, 47; cf. Mahābhārata, Sabhāparva, IX, 366) as a South Indian people.
