The distinction between the Pāṇḍya and the Coḷa divisions of the Tamil country is well known. Damiḷa, mentioned in the Nāgārjunikoṇḍa Inscriptions of Virapuruṣadatta, is the Tamil country. According to the *Mahāvaṃsa*, Vijaya married a daughter of the Pāṇḍu king whose capital was Madhurā in South India. Madhurā is Madurā in the south of the Madras Presidency. Another capital was probably at Kolkai. The rivers Tāmraparṇī and Kṛtamālā or Vaigāi flowed through it.
