The Pāśupatas make their appearance as early as the 6th century A.D. An inscription of this period refers to an endowment to god Śiva, managed by the Pāśupatas, made by their *ācārya*, named Vidyāpuṣpa, well versed in grammar and philosophy (*Śabda-Vaiśeṣika-Nyāyatattvārtha-kṛta-niścayaḥ*). After wandering to many holy places he was directed, in a dream, by the god Śaṅkara and established a *liṅga* on the Tuṅgīśa-*parvata*. This god came to be known as Tuṅgīśa even in later times.
