The state of religion in Siam proper seems to resemble that of Malay Peninsula. A little statuette of walking Buddha and other remains at Pong Tuk indicate the prevalence of Buddhism at a very early period. Images of both Brāhmanical and Buddhist deities of the Gupta style have been found all over the country. A Sanskrit inscription of the fourth century A.D. has been found at Si Tep along with Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava sculptures. Inscriptions containing Pali Buddhist texts of somewhat later period have also come to light.
