While the Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas are frequently mentioned, we do not find many specific references to the Vaiśyas and Śūdras, at least in early records. It seems that the society had really two broad divisions; the higher one composed of Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, who were two classes rather than castes, and the lower one consisting of the remaining people.
