Reference should also be made to two institutions which have a direct bearing on the material wealth and physical welfare of the people. These are the Vahnigṛhas or *dharmaśālās* and hospitals. King Jaya-varman VII of Kambuja founded 121 Vahnigṛhas and 102 Hospitals. Of the latter the site of fifteen can be determined by means of inscriptions which record their foundations. These inscriptions are almost identical and lay down detailed regulations about the hospitals. They give us a very good idea of the system of medical treatment organised by the state.
