Bombay’s growth as India’s leading commercial, shipping, industrial and financial centre was greatly linked to the trade with China. Many of its most prominent citizens in the 19^th century CE, including the well known merchant Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, were either directly connected with the China trade, or else came from families that were involved in it. The accumulation of capital through the China trade played a significant role in the early development of modern industry in India and in the development of Bombay’s urban infrastructure in the 19^th century CE.
