Around the 7ᵗʰ century CE, Theravada Buddhism expanded from Burma into southern Yunnan but soon disappeared due to wars and ensuing chaos. After the 8ᵗʰ century CE, Buddhism began to spread in the Nanzhao area of Yunnan and developed quickly.
