To facilitate the understanding of *sutras*, Chinese monks compiled some dictionaries among which *Yiqiejing Yinyi* (also abbreviated as *Xuanying Yinyi*), consisting of 25 volumes, was compiled by Xuan Ying (7^th century CE) around the year 648 CE. This book explained terms chosen from 450 Buddhist Hinayana texts with many quotations from ancient Chinese books. Huilin (737～820 CE) in his 100-volume *Yiqiejing Yinyi* (abbreviated as *Huilin Yinyi*) selected terms from 1,300 Buddhist texts to annotate them with a great number of quotations from ancient Chinese books. Till date this book is widely quoted for academic purposes.
