The territories of the peoples subdued by the four Pāṇḍava brothers in the four directions lay in the conventional Cakravarti-kṣetra or the sphere of an Indian emperor's political influence. It may be noted that Prāgjyotiṣa (Assam), as a Himalayan territory, has been placed in the north and that this is supported by Kālidāsa's Raghuvamśa, Canto iv.111 Many of the names occurring in these lists are also noticed in the Puranic lists of janapadas to be discussed in our next lecture.
