In this connection, reference should also be made to numerous Śākta-Śaiva holy places, called pīṭha, in various lists found in the Purāṇas and Tantras. Elsewhere we have discussed several hundreds of such places of pilgrimage.³⁵ An important early list of the same type is offered by the pre-Gupta Buddhist work entitled Mahāmāyurī.³⁶ Another class of medieval works on Indian geography is represented by the Deśāvalivivṛti by Jagnmohana-paṇḍita or by Vikramasāgara and the Digvijayaprakāśa.³⁷ Cases of late interpolations in the Purāṇas are offered by the occurrence of such geographical names as Kalikātā (Calcutta) in some manuscripts of the Bhaviṣya Purāṇa.³⁸
