(i) This restoration is frequently required in the nom. acc. m. f. of all numbers, in the declension of radical stems in -ā, -a. Examples, arranged in the order of the stems, are as follows: kṣá : kṣáam i 67 5a, [174 7b], vi 6 4b, x 31 9a; kṣáaḥ iv 28 5d. gná : gnáam v 43 6b; gnáaḥ (nom.) [i 61 8a], v 46 8a, vi 50 15c, [68 4a]; gnáaḥ (acc.) v 43 13c: gnáaḥ-pátiḥ ii 38 10b. Grassmann suggests the readings ganám etc., with which Lanman compares the Zend ghenáo: but in v 46 8a gnáaḥ is metrically preferable. já : jáaspátiḥ vii 38 6b, abjáam vii 34 16a, navajáaḥ iv 6 3c. jñá : ṛtajñáaḥ x 65 14b. dá : dravinodáaḥ vii 16 11a, viii 39 6c. pá : gopáa viii 25 1a; gopáaḥ viii 31 13b, x 23 6d; -gopáa i 120 7c; -gopáaḥ v 38 5c 5d, viii 46 32d 32e: tanúpáam viii 71 13d, tanúpáa vii 66 3a; paśupáaḥ iv 6 4c. prá : kakṣiapráam viii 3 22b, -práa i 10 3b; rathapráam viii 74 10a. yá : evayáaḥ [v 41 16b]. sá : kṣetrásáam iv 38 1c. sthá : giriṣtháaḥ ix 85 10b; giriṣtháaḥ ix 18 1a, 62 4b, 98 9c; patheṣtháam v 50 3c; pariṣtháaḥ *x 97 10a; ratheṣtháam viii 33 14a; vakṣaṇeṣtháaḥ v 19 5e. The forms [kāṣthaaḥ i 63 5c], kāṣthaam vii 93 3c are metrically probable, and may be due to a real or fancied derivation from this stem. sná : ghrtasnáaḥ viii 46 28b. For ablative forms in -aat see below § 151 i.
