v2.c12.131
These words are all very common words in constant daily use, and as such should, according to the क theory, have taken that suffix in Prakrit, and consequently end in â-o in the moderns. Some of them have an alternative form in â, as पर्ण, which has पत्ता “a leaf;” वर्ष, which has बरसा and वरषा in the sense of “rain;” the meanings of पान and बरस are secondary or restricted, as compared with पन्ना and बरसा, and they are perhaps late Tadbhavas in the former, but early Tadbhavas in the latter sense.
